Make out of the 2 Jaguars 1 good one, sell remaining parts, or what I always wanted to do, put a reliable engine and parts in the Jaguar and DD it.

That's sort of what I was thinking. Use the best bits of both.

Also, the AJ6 is a solid engine. I haven't heard any major issues with it. After cleaning up an earth, it fired straight up after a good few years in a field.

The rest of the electrical system is a bit iffy, but not the engine.

What the hell's he been keeping it in? Did he evict a hobbit for somewhere to put his Jaaag?

Also, ran across this on Autotrader today - manual diesel Alfa wagon, £795. So tempted...

A 2JZ Jaguar? That is... great!

That does ring a bell. Interesting, but not something I'd do.

It's just more interesting trying to do it with an engine that 'fits'. Harder, but that's where the fun is.

I actually like those "television" style headlights. Didn't those XJ6's later come with 4.2 liter inline-sixes? I'm not too familiar with some of the older Jags.

Yeah, and the rust worries me a little. Still, for that price I'm not expecting concourse and it's lees work than mine at the moment :)

Looks like a bit of a rough one, but so long as it's working mechanically you'll have a great time. The 2.4 JTD is the one my dad has and it's excellent. He's had a couple of reliability things though. It had a duff turbo from new which the utter shark of a dealer replaced twice with 'reconditioned' turbos that were just as bad (they're no longer in business). The crank position sensor went as well, which means that it'd start when cold but not when hot. Easy fix, but still.

Apart from that, in the 9 years he's had it as his daily it's been great.

They're not bad. It's entirely personal preference. Probably just because I've got one with the quads :)

The old series XJ6s came with 2.8l, 3.4l, 3.8l and 4.2l XK I6s , so that's where you're getting that from.

These came with 2.9l SOHC boat anchors, 3.6l DOHC AJ6 I6s and later 4.0l AJ6 I6s.

Oh okay, thanks for clearing that up!
Lol boat anchors, were they that heavy?

As much as I'd love to, I'm not buying it. Might need to haul some stuff and/or people around for work at some point soon, so I was having a look what's out there. It's all going to be in town, and enough miles that fuel economy's worth worrying about. But the whole point of getting something will be practicality, so the Alfa's a non-starter.

I'd quite like a Multipla, but the fuel economy's not that great, so it'd have to be cheap. I'd tolerate an Astra 1.3d, and I'd like to test drive a Doblo 1.3d, but they're all a bit expensive. I have a horrible feeling the thing that makes most sense is a Yaris Verso.

Kinja'd!!!

I wonder how many points that scores on the Jalopmeter. It's still a manual diesel wagon...

No worries :)

They're not light engines, but it's more that they're 165bhp engines motivating 1750kg (3858lbs) cars.

Dog slow.

Oh good God please don't :)

The Alfa's practical enough. Not as much as the Honda Stream in the fleet, but good enough.

If you're going for solely practicality then a Van's great. We've had an old Renault Trafic that was brilliant, but we couldn't take it into London because of emissions. Sold it and bought a Transit that's worse in nearly every way. Because it's RWD, the floor's hip-height rather than knee-height, which makes getting in the thing an extra faff. It's quicker (as in will do more than 45mph), but slightly thirstier (we drove from our house in Lingfield to the middle of France on one tank of diesel in the Renault).

Transit looks less sketchy though :)

I'd get a van, but insurance for business use in London is just ridiculous. Hence looking at vans with windows. Since it's all going to be in London traffic, even the 1.9 and 2 litre diesels are out unless they're really cheap. The Yaris Verso's the cheapest thing with small-diesel economy and loads of room in the back. Allegedly not much different from a regular Yaris to drive, so could be worse.

I do have something of a soft spot for truly ugly cars, but I suspect I might enjoy beating the crap out of a Yaris Verso and then scrapping it, because it's more beige than ugly.

Good point actually. You're not looking for something to cherish. Just something to utilise :)

Yup. It's likely to get trashed on the inside anyway. And there's something very freeing about really not giving a shit about your car's condition - you'll happily sit on the bonnet or whatever, because who the hell cars about one more dent.
